Brown Study

A portrait that works because of what it leaves out. The dog's head is modelled carefully — the wet nose, the amber eye, the soft fold of the ear — and everything around it is scribbled, scraped back and left raw against a wall of cadmium yellow.

The yellow does the heavy lifting. Against the ornate gilt frame it turns what could have been a sentimental subject into something with real presence over a fireplace.
