Northern Stallion

Hundreds of small painted tiles of colour, each laid separately, build the arch of the neck and the fall of the mane. Up close the surface is almost abstract — a drift of cobalt, ice blue, ochre and bone; at distance the animal resolves completely.

The cool grey ground was chosen to let the piece sit against a white or pale wall without the frame having to do the separating. It works particularly well in a room with cool textiles and a lot of natural light.
